Basic Overview

Danba, Tibetan name Rongzhag, sits in eastern Garzê Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, nested in Hengduan Mountain valleys beside the upper Dadu River, around 320–450 km west of Chengdu. It is the core homeland of Jiarong Tibetan people, honored as Kingdom of a Thousand Watchtowers and rated China’s Most Beautiful Ancient Village by Chinese National Geography. Elevation ranges from 1700 m river valley to over 5800 m snow peaks, blending alpine terrain, river valleys and centuries-old ethnic settlement.
Core History
Its culture roots trace back to the legendary Eastern Female Kingdom (Sui-Tang Dynasty, 6th–9th century), an ancient matriarchal regime once thriving across western Sichuan mountain valleys. Locals built massive stone defensive watchtowers (Diaolou) from Han to Qing dynasties for military defense; over 560 ancient stone towers still survive after hundreds of years of earthquakes and weathering.
Top 3 Must-see Spots
1. Jiaju Tibetan Village
The most iconic landmark of Danba, 8 km from Danba county town. More than 140 three-to-four-storey Jiarong stone-and-timber houses scatter tier upon tier on sunlit hillsides, with white plastered walls, red wooden eaves and yellow sacred color bands on roof edges, surrounded by pear orchards and terraced farmland.

Best visit: March–April (full pear blossom) & September–October (golden autumn foliage); early morning mist at 7–9 am brings fairyland-like views for photography.
Travel tip: Overnight at local Tibetan homestays to taste butter tea and homemade barley food.
2. Suopo Watchtower Cluster
The densest ancient diaolou gathering in Danba, 3 km east of county seat along Dadu River. Around 84 stone watchtowers of 4–13-sided structures stand steeply above the valley, dry-stacked with local slate and clay without any mortar, some over 50 meters high and aged 600+ years. Most towers were used for ancient military alert and tribal defense.
3. Zhonglu Tibetan Village

More primitive and less commercialized than Jiaju, with scattered farmhouses and hidden small watchtowers. Famous for sunrise over sacred Mount Murdo; fewer crowds make it ideal for slow hiking and authentic rural Jiarong daily-life experience.

Local Folk Culture
Known as Valley of Beauties, local Jiarong Tibetan women inherit ancient matriarchal customs and gorgeous hand-woven ethnic costumes. Villagers keep traditional Guozhuang bonfire dance, Tibetan opera and primitive farming customs alive all year round.
