Overview
Nestled in Maisu Town, Dege County, Garzê Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture, Sichuan Province, Dzongsar Monastery and the adjacent Dopu Valley are secluded gems in eastern Kham. This remote region preserves authentic Tibetan culture, ancient religious heritage and unspoiled alpine landscapes, favored by pilgrims, hikers and cultural explorers.
Location & Access
Dzongsar Monastery: Sits along the Maisu River valley, around 40 kilometres from Dege County seat.
Dopu Valley: Lies to the south of Dzongsar Monastery, a 30-minute drive away. It stretches along the southern foot of Dopu Rezha Snow Mountain (6,119 m), with Is Gyasa Peak (5,550 m) standing at the valley’s far end.
Travel Route: Chengdu → Garzê → Dege County → Maisu Town. Paved roads connect Maisu Town directly to Dopu Valley.
Dzongsar Monastery (Dzongsar Trashi Lhatsé)
History & Religious Status
Founded in 746 AD originally as a Bon religious site, the monastery was converted to the Sakya School of Tibetan Buddhism in the 13th century, boasting over 1,200 years of history.
It is the cradle of the Khyentse Lineage and a major centre of the Rimé Movement — the non-sectarian Buddhist revival movement across Tibet.
Layout & Community
The complex consists of the main temple compound on the hillside, the renowned Dzongsar Shedra (Buddhist college) at the foot of the mountain, and a traditional Tibetan medicine hospital. Roughly 1,900 monks reside and study here. Visitors can witness daily Buddhist rituals and scripture debates.
Dopu Valley
Natural Scenery
A pristine alpine valley surrounded by towering snow-capped peaks, including Dopu Rezha, Dzoga Molong and Dogya Yelong. Dense primeval forests, clear mountain streams and lush alpine meadows make up the landscape. Wild animals are occasionally spotted in this little-visited wilderness.
Hiking
Well-marked casual hiking trails run through the valley, ranging from 1 km to 7 km in length. It is ideal for gentle walks to enjoy tranquil nature and panoramic views of the surrounding snow mountains.

Depart from Chengdu, travel via Garzê to Dege County and arrive at Maisu Town for overnight stay.

Elevation: Dzongsar Monastery at about 3,800 m; Dopu Valley ranges from 3,500 m to 4,500 m. Take precautions against altitude sickness.
