Tuanshan Village (团山古村, Tuánshān Gǔcūn) – an ancient Yi-Han mixed village and AAAA scenic area near Jianshui, Yunnan, famed for its well-preserved Ming-Qing architecture and “World’s Most Endangered Monuments” status (2006).

Location: 13km west of Jianshui Ancient Town, Honghe Prefecture.

Yi Name: “Tushou” – “land of gold and silver”.

History: Founded in Ming Dynasty (1368–1644); 80% of residents share the surname Zhang (descendants of settlers from Jiangxi).

Awards: World Monument Watch (2006), “China Traditional Village”, “National Key Rural Tourism Village”.

Population: ~1,000 people (200+ households) of 9 ethnic groups: Yi, Han, Dai, Hani, Zhuang, Miao, Hui, Bai, Buyi.

Architecture (Ming-Qing Style)

Layout: “Three Courts with One Screen Wall”, “Four Courtyards & Five Wells”, “Horse-Riding Corner Towers” (Southern Yunnan style).

Materials: Clay walls, green tiles, wooden beams; whitewashed exteriors, carved wood/stone/brick details.

Zhang Family Garden (张家花园): Largest mansion; 5 courtyards, 100+ rooms; elaborate woodcarvings.

General’s Residence (将军第), Imperial Grace Mansion (皇恩府), Mahavira Temple (大乘寺), Zhang Ancestral Hall (张氏宗祠).

Ancient Streets: Flagstone lanes, old wells, traditional Yi houses.

How to Get There

From Jianshui:

Vintage Narrow-Gauge Train: Jianshui Station → Tuanshan (30 mins, ¥50; scenic route).

Taxi: 20 mins, ¥40–50.

Bus: Line 9 from Jianshui Old Town (¥5, 40 mins).

Practical Tips

Tickets: ¥50 (includes main buildings); free for under 1.2m.

Hours: 8:00–18:00 (last entry 17:30).

Best Time: Year-round (mild climate); spring (blooming flowers) or autumn (harvest) recommended.

Nearby: Pair with Jianshui Ancient Town, Jianshui Confucian Temple, or Yuanyang Rice Terraces (1.5hrs away).

Tuanshan is a living museum of Southern Yunnan’s ethnic fusion and architectural heritage – a quiet escape from crowded tourist spots.
