Overview

Shadzong Ritro, also officially known as Xiazong Monastery, is a prestigious Gelug Buddhist hermitage located on the cliffside of Ami Jieri Holy Mountain in Ping’an District, Haidong City, Qinghai Province. Bearing the Tibetan meaning of “eastern valley retreat”, the site is renowned as one of the four major sacred meditation lands in Amdo Tibetan area. Nestled in the tranquil Huangshui River valley, the monastery sits on steep red sandstone precipices, boasting a seamless integration of precipitous natural landscape and primitive Tibetan Buddhist religious culture. It is a quiet, little-known pilgrimage and hermitage site within easy reach of Xining urban area.

History & Origin

The monastery traces its founding back to the early 14th century, established by the 4th Karmapa, one of the most influential masters in Tibetan Buddhism. Its most pivotal historical status stems from its connection with Tsongkhapa, the founder of the Gelug school. At the age of seven, the young Tsongkhapa formally received novice monk precepts and tonsure here under the guidance of the 4th Karmapa, marking the starting point of his Buddhist practice journey.

A legendary sacred tale has been passed down for centuries: when Tsongkhapa received tonsure, a strand of his hair was buried in the cliff rock. Miraculously, an ancient cypress tree grew out of the rock crevice, which has been preserved to this day as the core sacred relic of Shadzong Ritro. Thanks to this profound karmic connection with Tsongkhapa, the monastery evolved into an important birthplace shrine of Gelug tradition in Amdo region.

Architectural & Cultural Features

Different from large-scale formal monasteries, Shadzong Ritro follows the traditional “Ritro” mountain retreat layout, featuring cliff caves, embedded halls and scattered meditation huts. The entire building complex clings vertically to the red sandstone cliff, adopting classic Sino-Tibetan combined wooden structure, with elegant flying eaves, golden roofs and surrounding prayer flags, creating a serene and ethereal religious atmosphere.
The monastery maintains a primitive and simple monastic style with a small number of resident monks. Centered on the sacred ordination cave and the divine cypress tree, it preserves complete traditional meditation inheritance and ancient religious rituals. Away from commercialization and crowds, it retains the pure practice temperament of ancient Tibetan Buddhist mountain hermitages.
