Basic Info:

Yubeng is a secluded traditional Tibetan hamlet tucked under the sacred Meili Snow Mountain (Kawa Karpo, 6740m peak), Yunling Township, Deqin, Diqing, northwest Yunnan, inside the UNESCO Three Parallel Rivers World Natural Heritage Zone.

Elevation: 3000–3230m, split into Upper Yubeng (上雨崩) on mountain slope and Lower Yubeng (下雨崩) in valley bottom; 20–30 mins’ walk apart via mountain trail.

Only around 30 local Tibetan households; no paved motor road into the core village historically, earning it the reputation of China’s hidden Shangri-La from the novel Lost Horizon.
Access:

Visitors start from either Xidang Village or Ninong Village parking lots:
Hike over Nanzong Pass (3700m): 5–7hrs, ~18km mountain trail
Hire local horseback ride: 3–4hrs
New shortcut asphalt road available for partial downhill exit via Ninong Canyon nowadays.

Core Classic Trekking Routes:




1. Sacred Waterfall (Shenpu, from Lower Yubeng)
Round trip ~6hrs, holy Tibetan pilgrimage site; locals walk clockwise three times for blessings, rainbows often appear beside cascading glacial waterfall.


2. Ice Lake (Binghu, from Upper Yubeng via Base Camp)
Full-day 7–8hr round trek, alpine glacial lake surrounded by primitive fir forest and rocky snow ridges.
3. Holy Lake (Shenhu, advanced hike)
Tough 10+hr round trip above 4300m, best panoramic overlook of main Kawa Karpo peak for hardcore trekkers.



Culture & Local Life:
Residents follow traditional Tibetan Buddhism, keep farming and yak-herding lifestyle; scattered white-walled Tibetan houses, colorful prayer flags strung across valleys, barley terraces and pasturelands alongside Yubeng River. Local specialties: homemade barley wine, butter tea, wild matsutake and cordyceps in harvest seasons.
Best Travel Seasons:
May–June: Rhododendron blossom all over alpine meadows
Sept–Oct: Golden autumn forest, clear sky for watching Golden Sunrise over Meili Peaks
Dec–Mar: Snow-covered valley, highest odds to catch golden dawn glow on snow summits
Avoid rainy July–August (muddy trails, frequent mountain fog blocking mountain view).

Lodge options: budget dorm beds or snow-mountain-view boutique homestays in both Upper & Lower Yubeng.
Prepare layered waterproof outdoor wear, trekking poles and sun protection for high UV at plateau.
