Gomar Monastery is a Gelug (Yellow Hat) sect monastery in Rebkong (Tongren), Huangnan Prefecture, Qinghai Province, China.

Basic Info
Location: 5 km north of Tongren County seat, ~175 km south of Xining (elevation ~2,600 m).
Founding: Established in 1741 by Lama Yarjang; full name: Gomar Kelden Phuntsokling.
Size: ~200 monks; main structures include the Great Assembly Hall, Maitreya Hall, and Protector Hall (all pre-1958).

Key Attraction: Giant Kalachakra Stupa
The monastery’s landmark is a 7‑storey, 35 m‑tall Kalachakra (Astronomy) Stupa, built in the 1980s.
It is the largest stupa in Amdo, with colorful murals and used for calculating the Tibetan calendar.
Visitors may climb it clockwise for valley views.
Monlam Festival (Winter)
Gomar hosts major Monlam (Great Prayer Festival) events, including the unveiling of a giant Thangka (sacred Buddha painting) and masked Cham dances.
It is one of the three largest monasteries in Rebkong, a region famed for Thangka art.
Travel Tips
Access: 6 km from central Tongren; cross the Longwu River from Wutun Village.
Note: Some sources state women may not enter the main monastery (check locally).
Best time: February (Monlam) or summer for art and scenery.
