Rongwo Monastery is the largest and most important monastery in Rebkong (Tongren), and the third-largest in Amdo (after Labrang and Ta’er). It’s the heart of Regong art and a key Gelug site.

Basic Info

Location: Longwu Town, Tongren (Rebkong), Huangnan Prefecture; ~175 km south of Xining, on the Longwu River.

Founding: 1301 (Yuan Dynasty) as a Sakya temple; converted to Gelug in 1630.

Full name: Rongwo Tosam Namgyel Ling.

Size: ~400–600 monks; 9 main temples, 3 colleges (Dialectic, Tantric, Kalachakra).

Status: National Key Cultural Relic (1996); 4A scenic area.
