Baoxiang Temple

Baoxiang Temple (Yunnan) Also called Shibao Temple, it’s known as the “Hanging Temple of Yunnan”.

Location

On Foding Mountain, Shibao Mountain Scenic Area, Jianchuan County, Dali Bai Autonomous Prefecture.

About 120 km north of Dali Old Town.

History

Founded in the Yuan Dynasty (1271–1368).

Built during the Ming Zhengtong period (1436–1449) by Gao Lun, a local magistrate of Heqing.

Originally a Taoist temple, later became a Buddhist-Taoist combined site.

Renamed Baoxiang Temple in the 32nd year of the Kangxi reign (Qing Dynasty).

Highlights

Cliff-hanging Architecture: Built on a sheer cliff, with halls layered upward; the Maitreya Hall and Jade Emperor Pavilion seem to hang in midair.

Buddhist-Taoist Fusion: Houses Buddha statues (Buddha Hall) and Taoist deities (Jade Emperor Pavilion).

Wild Monkeys: Macaques often appear along the path, visitors can feed them.

Shibao Mountain Singing Festival: A major Bai folk festival held here around late July (lunar calendar).

Opening Hours: 08:00–18:00 daily.

Admission: Included in Shibao Mountain ticket (separate for the grottoes).

Best Time: March–May and September–November (mild weather).
