The Bongya Monastery is located in Chukhok Township, Rebkong (Tongren) County, Malho (Huangnan) Prefecture, in Tshongon (Qinghai) Province, China. It is the largest Bon monastery in the region. Its full name, Menri Shedrub Mindroling, indicates its affiliation with the Menri monastic tradition, founded by Nyame Sherab Gyaltsen (1356–1415).

Bongya Rinpoche was born in 1935 in the northern Amdo region of Rebkong, Tibet. Lamas from both the Bon and Nyingma traditions recognized him as the reincarnation of Bongya Yungdrung Phuntsok.
